Huge Anglo-Saxon Treasure Hoard found in England
Saturday, January 24th, 2009An amateur treasure hunter prowling his friend’s farmland with a metal detector stumbled upon the largest Anglo-Saxon Treasure ever discovered. According to British archaeologists, the massive seventh-century hoard incudes gold and silver sword decorations, crosses, and other items. A total of 1,345 items have been cleaned up and examined so far.
Anglo-Saxon artisans made striking objects out of gold and enamel, and also created poetry that still amazes people today. Their best-known literary work is “Beowolf,” an epic poem about a warrior who does battle with monsters and a dragon. According to Leslie Webster of the British Museum, about 11 pounds (5 kilograms) of gold have so far been uncovered. The hoard consisted of crosses and other religious artifacts, mixed in with military items, such as sword pommel caps may shed new light on the relationship between Christianity and warfare among the Anglo-Saxons.
