China to Build Hi-Speed Rail Link to Europe

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The journey from London to Beijing by rail could take just under two days, under a Chinese plan to build an international rail network for trains that can travel almost as fast as aircraft. Three different rail networks are being planned, which would extend the Britain-to-China link to Singapore. The system would be built within a decade. Passengers on a second route would travel on a network to the north of China through Russia, and on to Germany, where the railway would connect up with the European Railway System. A third network would extend south through Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, and Malaysia. The trains will be designed to travel at a speed of 320 kph. To read the full article, CLICK HERE.

Huge Anglo-Saxon Treasure Hoard found in England

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

An amateur treasure hunter prowling his friend’s farmland with a metal detector stumbled upon the largest Anglo-Saxon Treasure ever discovered. According to British archaeologists, the massive seventh-century hoard incudes gold and silver sword decorations, crosses, and other items. A total of 1,345 items have been cleaned up and examined so far.

Anglo-Saxon artisans made striking objects out of gold and enamel, and also created poetry that still amazes people today. Their best-known literary work is “Beowolf,” an epic poem about a warrior who does battle with monsters and a dragon. According to Leslie Webster of the British Museum, about 11 pounds (5 kilograms) of gold have so far been uncovered. The hoard consisted of crosses and other religious artifacts, mixed in with military items, such as sword pommel caps may shed new light on the relationship between Christianity and warfare among the Anglo-Saxons. An emerging field known as “Sentiment Analysis” is now taking shape around one of the computer world’s unexplored frontiers. This new science has the capability to translate the vaguries of human emotion into hard satistical data. This is apparently becoming something more than just a simple programming exercise, as, for many businesses, online opinion has turned into a sort of “virtual currency” that can make or break a product in the virtual marketplace.
